  • Skins:Alter what you look like when you play Minecraft. Kids can get creative with our Skin and our set of starter skins.
  • Items:Customize Minecraft items that you use. You can create a rainbow-colored version of a sword, for example, using the Resource Editor.
  • Items:Design your own special blocks. For example, make the grass block and sand block look like cakes to turn your whole world into a cake world.

  • Change the look and behavior of these mods. You can transform a wolf to a dinosaur and then modify its behavior with drag and drop block coding.
  • Create a mod and deploy it on your own Private Minecraft Java Server. Build complete multiplayer games like spleef or soccer, or even construct mazes and cities. Server mods can only be deployed on a PC or Mac computer.
  • Client Mods: Program a mod with code in Tynker and deploy it in your Windows 10 Edition or Pocket Edition of Minecraft. This uses a socket connection in the newer Minecraft clients. These mods do not require a server.

Importing Minecraft Mods With Minecraft Forge

Now that your mod is complete, all that’s left to do is import it into Minecraft.

To install this mod, or any other mod, you need to install Minecraft Forge. Forge provides a simple and easy way to install custom mods into Minecraft itself.

From the Forge home page, download an installer suitable for your operating system and Minecraft version. Run the installer, and when prompted, choose Install client.

Once installed, launch or restart Minecraft. From the Minecraft Launcher, press the up arrow to the right of the play button at the bottom. Select Forge. This will load Minecraft with Forge, so you will need to do this everytime you want to use your mod.

When in Minecraft, things will look different with Forge running. There’s some extra text at the bottom, along with a Mods button.

Choose the Mods button, and you’ll see that your mod is not visible. You need to install your mod into Forge/Minecraft. Installation involves copying and pasting your mod into the mods folder of Minecraft.

  • On Windows, this is in AppData/.minecraft/
  • On Mac, this is in Library/Application Support/minecraft/

You may need to restart Minecraft if you’ve pasted your mod while it is running. Enter the mods menu, and your mod will show up, complete with description, title, picture, and creator information. Well done!

For this example, the “super_diamond” is now visible alongside all the other blocks.

What Are Mods For Minecraft

Emerald Mod (1.7.2)

Mod is short for modification, so a Minecraft mod is basically just something that alters anything in Minecraft from its original state to a different state.

Mods can add new recipes to craft, add or change creatures in the game, and change the way the game plays in even more drastic ways. Other mods work behind the scenes to make the game run better, look better, or even add new features like virtual reality support.

While it’s possible to play without any mods, installing mods can breath new life into the game and and make it a lot more fun to play.

Before you go looking for a mod to install, it’s important to understand that there are two different versions of Minecraft, and each version handles mods in its own way.

The original version is now called Minecraft: Java Edition, and you can play it on Windows, Mac and Linux PCs. Mods are widely available and free, so finding and installing good ones can be complicated.

The newer version is simply called Minecraft. It’s available on Windows 10, Xbox One, mobile phones and tablets, and other platforms. This version of the game lets you play with people on different platforms. For instance, you could play on your Xbox while a friend plays on their iPhone. Mods that were designed for the Java version will not work with this newer version.

An Introduction To Minecraft Modding

Minecraft is a game that requires some explanation. However, it is a limitless source of creativity in and of itself, considering both its game mechanics and every component of the game may be customised.

Minecraft mods provide you with a lot of options for controlling your gameplay. You may make your game appear better, make your own Jurassic Park, play a role-playing game with quests and dungeons, or even explore space after building and launching your rocket. Minecraft modifications tenfold your creative potential if you thought regular Minecraft unlocked it.

Minecraft has 170 million active users as of 2022. And if even a small number of them begin customising the game, Minecraft has the potential to inspire millions of young children to pursue careers in science.

Running Minecraft And Verifying The Mod

Lets launch the game to see what this mod does!

Press the green arrow shown in Figure 1-8 to run the game.

Figure 1-8. Running Minecraft with Eclipse

There is a lot that happens in the background to run the game. Remember javac, java, and jar, all of which are tools that we installed earlier as part of the JDK? Eclipse uses these tools to compile all the Java source files from our project into class files. These files are then packaged into a JAR file. This JAR file is then used to run the Minecraft server and the client launcher. The client is also connected to this server as well. This is shown in Figure 1-9.

Figure 1-9. Default Minecraft client

The lower-left corner of the client window shows the version of Forge, 1.8 in this case. It also shows how many mods are loaded, four in this case. Three of the mods are default Forge mods that are required by Forge, and the fourth one is the example mod that is explained in this chapter.

The server console is displayed within a new tab in Eclipse, as shown in Figure 1-10.

Figure 1-10. Server console in Eclipse

Figure 1-10 shows an empty server console, but this will be populated with messages from the server log. You should see the message shown here in the Minecraft server console:

 : :DIRT BLOCK > > tile.dirt

And so now you have run the Minecraft client and can play the usual game. The big difference between now and before is that you can change the game to your liking. Doesnt that feel more exciting than just playing the game?
